Hugh Jackman has confirmed he's ready to hang up the Wolverine claws.

The Australian actor carved his name in Hollywood as the buffed up X-Men character, but 17 years playing a mutant that doesn't age has taken it's toll.

The Wolverine star says the latest installment, 'Wolverine 3', will be his last role as the character of Logan.

'This will be my last one,' Jackman stated when asked about it on the Dr. Oz show.

'It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let's be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I'm so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it.

'I kind of have in my head what we're going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.'

It's still not certain however whether Jackman will be making an appearance in the upcoming 'X-Men: Apocalypse' film or not.

Filming is currently going on on the movie which is due for release in May 2016, nearly a year before the next Wolverine movie.

Jackman has yet to be spotted on the X-Men Montreal set.

Jackman's Wolverine has been the most iconic role in the franchise since Russell Crowe recommended his countryman to filmmakers for the role of Logan in the original X-Men movie. I personally love his role in that movie, he is the right match.

His presence will be difficult to replace, although another local star is rising through the X-Men ranks.

Director Brian Singer last week briefly tweeted, then deleted, a picture of 18-year-old actor Kodi Smit-McPhee in character as the Nightcrawler with the comment 'Catch him before he's gone,'.

Removing the image a nod to the character's illusiveness, nearly impossible to spot in the shadows with his indigo skin.

The third Wolverine movie, the last to feature Jackman, is scheduled for release in Australia in March 2017.
