Fire Burns Down A Hostel In UNN: Where Was The Fire Service?

It was a bitter moment for students in Okeke Female hostel of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. A conflagration hit the  3rd floor of Okeke hostel. The fire started at about 7:12 PM. Students living in nearby hostels alerted the security who in turn called the fire service, however the story didn’t end there.

The fire service arrived at about 7:37PM conveyed by a hillux security car blaring siren. They reached the hostel immediately and tackled the problem, however the fire was burning the two wings of the hostel moving from one room to another through the roof. They tried moving round but got their vehicle stuck in a drain. They tried pulling it out but to no avail. The fire resumed, hitting the rooms fiercely. The fie service could only bring a truck, and the truck was stuck. After much hassle, the truck was pulled out. It took about 30minutes to pull it out.

The fire burnt was still moving slowly into different rooms in the ‘series’ aided by several gas cookers that blasted like bombs and got eyewitness like me jerking from as far as 120meters! Other things that got burnt was clothes, books, documents, kerosene stoves, beds etc.

The pitiful part of it is that girls were crying, and placing calls to their friends and parents at home. This got many people sorrowful, the police was there, security men were there, lecturers were there, students were there, fire fighters had already gone probably for good or to reinforce.

Statistically speaking, the whole 17 rooms on the left wing of the floor burnt to ashes, so also the other wing making it a total of 34 rooms wasted! A room houses 4 students, so technically speaking 136 students lost their bed spaces! The school has failed to provide rooms to her massive student due to lack of rooms, now she has lost 34 allocated rooms.

It’s a pity for a great institution like the University of Nigeria to treat her students this way. This part of the problem with Nigeria and indeed other developing countries. However, Aluta Continua!

Eleven Lies We All Tell Ourselves On New Year's Eve

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration, friendship and, most of all, reflection. As we look back on a year filled with ups and downs, we’re anxiously hoping for more ups in the coming year.
And keeping with New Year’s Eve traditions, we’ll grab a pen and paper (or just our phone) and write down our resolutions for the new year, which are usually complete and total lies. Only 8% of people actually stick to their resolutions, according to Forbes.
However, lying to ourselves about how we’re going to go to the gym every other day — or even just joining a gym — aren’t the only fibs we make on NYE. Let’s take a closer look at them, illustrated with Disney princesses GIFs, because why not. 2015 was the year for reimaginings, you know.
  1. “Yes, of course I’m making a list of New Year’s resolutions.”

Girl, come on. You might come up with a list in your head, but you know if you don’t write it down, you’ll forget it, which is conveniently what you’d like to do anyway.
  2. “And yes, I’m so going to accomplish everything on my list.”

Pfft. Yeah, right. Did you not just read that statistic we mentioned a second ago? Less than 10% of people actually follow through with their resolutions.
  3. “I don’t care if I’m the only person at the NYE party with no one to kiss.”

You might not want to be in a relationship right now, but you’re definitely not looking forward to being the odd one out, surrounded by a horde of smooching couples once that clock strikes midnight.
  4. “I’m going to write the correct year on papers the first time.”

You and I both know we’re gonna keep writing 2015 on stuff until about June. Maybe by then it’ll have sunk in that 2016 is here to stay.
  5. “I’ll get more sleep this year.”

Sure, you say this now, but what about when you’re in the midst of a ~very important~ binge-watching session and you just *have* to know what happens to so and so before you can fall asleep peacefully. What then, hmm?
  6. “This will be the year I finally get my life together.”

Unless you’re 95 years old, you’re doing just fine right now; you still have many, many wonderful years ahead of you. There’s still plenty of time to figure it all out, so work on something smaller while you build your way up. A few examples: finishing your degree, finding a job, figuring out how to pull an all-nighter yet still look flawless AF the next morning.
  7. “I’m going to watch what I eat…starting tomorrow.”

You might go on a diet and/or work out a little more than you used to, but unless you’re 100% committed to living a healthier lifestyle, that new eating regiment will soon look like a distant memory. Well, until next New Year’s Eve, that is.
  8. “I’m actually going to watch everything in my Netflix queue this year.”

Sure you are. And you’ll also only watch “one more episode” before bed, huh? Who are you kidding? Not Netflix, that’s for sure. Netflix knows the true you.
  9. “I’ll seriously cut back on the internet, maybe even go outside more often.”

You know that cutting back on the internet also pertains to the internet on your phone, right? Are you seriously going to ditch your social media apps that make your commute and daily life all the better? You know what’s not always outside? Free Wi-Fi. Let that sink in for a moment.
  10. “I vow to read more and watch less.”

If the last three years have been any indication, you’ll start a book in January and (possibly) finish it by next January. Let’s be real here.
  11. “This will be my best year ever.”

Not to sound like a buzzkill, but the coming year probably won’t be your best year ever, and why would you want it to be? That means the best year of your life will soon be behind you, and then what do you have to look forward to in the future? Do your best to focus on the positives that happen during the year. Looking back, every year will seem like it was the best year of your life

One Good Deed... Busboy Rewarded for Returning lost $3k cash

Johnny Duckworth 'Thumper' who returned $3k in diner
Johnny Duckworth, known as "Thumper", was working his regular shift at Randy's Southside Diner in Grand Junction, Colorado, when he spotted the envelope lying on the floor.

Regular Darrell Cox had dropped the cash after stopping for breakfast and failed to realise the money was missing when he left.

Mr Duckworth, who has worked at the diner for nine years, immediately handed the money to his boss Randy Emmons, who discovered a pay slip inside and returned it to the bank where Mr Cox had withdrawn it.

Mr Emmons told FOX31 TV: "He walked up to me and said 'boss, I found this envelope, it feels like it has a lot of money in it'.

"And he handed it to me and walked away... and I opened the envelope up and there was 30 $100 bills. I couldn't believe it, I was shocked.

"Right now he's riding his bike back and forth to work, it's winter. And he gets his pay cheque garnished for medical bills he had to have."

After getting the money back, Mr Cox returned to the diner and gave Mr Duckworth $300 and a note on the same envelope which read: "Merry Christmas to a super honest guy."

Mr Duckworth said: "[It was] just laying on the floor, dead as a doorknob just laying there. It's not mine. I work for a living, I make money."

Mr Emmons set up a fundraiser on the GoFundMe website. So far, the site has raised more than $8,500 for "Thumper".

Miss Universe pageant host Steve Harvey names wrong winner

missuniverse1220.jpg
Miss Universe pageant host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner at the end of Sunday night's big show in Las Vegas and was forced to make an embarrassing apology.

After announcing Miss USA, Olivia Jordan, as the third runner-up, Harvey initially named Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, as the night's big winner, relegating the remaining contestant, Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurzbach, to the second runner-up spot.

But after Arevalo received the crown and a bouquet of flowers, Harvey announced he had made an error and that Wurzbach was in fact the winner. It meant Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, 21, of Colombia, who had already been crowned, had to take off the glitzy trinket and hand it to Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, a 26-year-old actress and model from the Philippines.

A stunned Wurzbach, who had taken her place with the other contestants behind Arevalo, then walked out to center stage. Last year's Miss Universe, Colombia's Paulina Vega, then removed the crown from Avrevalo's head and placed it on Wurtzbach.

With both pageant contestants standing at the front of the stage, the show concluded.

Harvey, who was hosting the contest for the first time, held up the card announcing the order of finishers for Fox network cameras to see up close afterward. He said he re-read the card and noticed it said "first runner-up" next to the Colombia contestant's name before he asked producers if he had made a mistake. Talking with reporters afterward, Harvey and an executive for pageant owner WME-IMG called it human error.

Harvey wrote on Twitter: "I'd like to apologise wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines for my huge mistake.

"I feel terrible."

Wurtzbach later said she felt conflicting emotions as the mistake happened: joy when she was told she had indeed won, concern for Aravelo and confusion at the whole situation.

Wurtzbach said she tried to approach Aravelo onstage afterward but the Colombian was crying and surrounded by a crowd of women. She said she realized it was, "probably bad timing."

"I did not take the crown from her," Wurtzbach told reporters after the pageant concluded, saying she wished the contestant from Colombia well and hoped the Latin American community understands that "none of this was my fault."

"None of this was done on purpose. It was an honest mistake," she said, apologizing on behalf of the organization she now represents. She said Harvey told her afterward that she "should just enjoy the moment."

Miss universe title wrongly awarded to Miss Columbia
It was the first Miss Universe title won by a contestant from the Philippines for more than 40 years. However, it's the third time a contestant from the Philippines has ever won the title. It could have been the second win in a row for Colombia.

It was also the first time viewers had a chance to vote on the winner, rating contestants in the swimwear, evening gown and interview competitions.

Shortly before the end of the contest, a car mounted a pavement close to the Las Vegas venue and ploughed into pedestrians, killing one person and injuring at least 37 others.

Police have said the fatal crash was intentional.

“Thriller” has been an even bigger seller overseas, with 100 million copies of the album sold worldwide since its 1982 release.

Jackson’s music experienced a surge in popularity after his unexpected death in June 2009. “Thriller” includes the hits “Beat It,” “Billie Jean” and the title track.

John Branca is the co-administrator of Jackson’s estate. He says “Thriller” remains the yardstick against which all albums are measured.

He says the album is special because Jackson wrote it to appeal to broad audiences, which helped fuel international sales.
