Check tis Out! Which Nigerian record label is the Biggest in 2016?

This year, we have had two record labels come up against each other. The Don Jazzy-led Mavins ruffled the feathers of the YBNL rap boys, with leader Olamide making the fight his own.

This is not a permanent fixture, but the war still rages on other fronts, with music being the core weapon of competing. We bring you the state of the union in record label positions in 2016.

Who’s on the rise? Who’s taking a beating? Will Five Star Music give us another trick show or will Kcee continue his dry spell of no hits? Who’s the big hitter at Chocolate City these days? And why are the other YBNL boys taking a chill for Lil Kesh and Adekunle Gold to shine.

Mavins
play

In 2015, Mavin Records consolidated their grip on pop culture with Korede Bello hitting dizzying heights with ‘Godwin’, a single who made history as the biggest pop song of the year according to Pulse Music…which pretty much accounts for everyone else.

Without the presence of their Queen, who was chasing the bright lights of motherhood, the label still found a way to keep everything ticking as D’Prince awoke from his slumber, and Dr Sid gave a good song in ‘Kabiyesi’. Reekado Banks is still one song away from true greatness, and Di’Ja still seeks to recreate the magic of ‘Awww’.

This year, Tiwa’s album is being promoted with vigour, giving the entire house a good injection of firepower. Korede Bello needs to prove that he is not just a one-trick Jheri-curled pony. ‘Godwin’ might have made him dine out multiple times last year, but 2016 needs another shot in the arm. A follow-up song is what’s needed. Reekado Banks is a pop machine, and he needs to keep his work rate up. You get a feeling he is just on the cusp of greatness, and the next song might be his blockbuster. Dr SID needs more ammo. He can’t win the game when he isn’t playing. D’Prince had a decent personal year but needs to up the ante.

The main obstacle for the Mavins are their diversity in talent which takes a whole lot of work to bring together and make shine, but they have Don Jazzy, Altims, and the increasingly artistic Baby Fresh taking them through the paces.

YBNL
play

Olamide, Lil Kesh and Adekunle Gold lead the Mavins (Press)

All the shine on this record label previously was enjoyed by the CEO, Olamide, who singlehandedly via music, smart business decisions, and a good heart, built this crew. But in the past two years he has given Lil Kesh a life, saw potential in Adekunle Gold, and signed up a bunch of others. (Just in case you honestly forgot, Xino, Viktoh, and Chinko Ekun also share the YBNL roster).

‘Eyan Mayweather’ album was an artistic flop, with Olamide outdoing himself with another album that sounds more like a mixtape. Thankfully, the hit singles and concerts have been a huge blessing to the man, making him arguably Nigeria’s biggest act in 2015.

Lil Kesh needs a body of work to stake his claim as the rightful heir to the throne. He has huffed, puffed, and lost out on the Next Rated crown, but that should inspire him, not break him, (seeing that he makes enough money for a new SUV every two weeks). He needs his album out. Adekunle Gold gets enough golden love from the South West, but outside the region, he doesn’t exist. And yes, I confirmed that with investigative journalism which I have failed to publish. He needs to diversify his work to appeal to more people, and that generosity will pay off.

Viktoh is still a work in progress as he is unsure of his true musical direction and depth. Chinko Ekun is still industry news, and Xino has never been seen.

A good way to get ahead for this house is a compilation album to get things rocking. Lil Kesh needs that album badly. Olamide will rinse and repeat his yearly process, but more music from Chinko Ekun, who is extremely talented will give a fresh dimension to this label.

They’re in good shape. For now.

Chocolate City
play

This is a make-or-break year for what was once the biggest and highest flying squad of Africa.

Chocolate City once had a firm grip on pop radio’s windpipe, with hits rolling out their conveyor belt, looking pretty, smelling good, and even sounding like God’s own craft. Brymo once called this label home. But right now, nothing is working on the level that it is meant to be. There's no more gift-wrapped singles coming in, with Ice Prince, M.I and Jagz taking home all the prizes for their brilliance. Today, M.I Abaga is battling to keep his place intact,Ice Prince is sitting squarely on good material, and Jesse Jagzhas so far failed to come alive in his second coming.

This seems like a house in mild disarray. Dreaming big is the hallmark of achievers, but M.I Abaga might have bitten off a fairly unchewable chunk of meat with merging this label to his Loopy Music. A look through this label has very industry savvy person scratching their heads in confusion. Pryse still belongs here. DJ Caise is here. DJ Lambo belongs top this crew. Then there’sLoose Kaynon, Milli, Koker, Ruby Gyang, Victoria Kimani, Kahli Abdu and VHS Safari, and forgotten man Nosa.

M.I Abaga and Ice Prince are still the big hitters of this house. Jesse Jagz has love and respect working for him, but that has failed to translate into musical success.

This year, they have a master plan, which includes releasing 20 music videos, but that also might not be enough seeing how much talent they have and the journey they need to make to hit the top again. Loose Kaynon has ‘The Gemini Project’ out and about.

Chocolate City stands a chance at re-upping their reign. If not then, well, they'll sink fast. You know, the less classy, gaudy, not-quite-Titanic but still indisputably equally behemoth. Ice Prince and M.I will float to safety on a raft, but there won’t be enough room for many others.

HKN Gang
play

Davido and HKN Gang (Press)

For years, Davido has been and still remains the golden child of HKN. Simply put, HKN is Davido.

A record label which hypes itself as a powerhouse, HKN will not be HKN if Davido is removed out of the equation. Who wants to step up?

Sina Rambo and B-Red come across as clubbers who are about the fast life, than genuine music makers who believe in their craft and work to grow it. They simply don’t cut it as musicians who generously apply themselves to grow the art. Danagog is a pawn in all of this, and Deekay does not exist.

Davido is the man here and continues to be so. A high-profile publishing deal with Sony Music Entertainment has him in good stead to dominate 2016, with an album in the works for release.

But HKN needs a boost. Davio’s hegemony will not be enough to carry them through forever. They need sideshows and supporting cast. Right now, only one man is in the ring. The others watch on.

Five Star Music
play

Skibbi at his record deal announcement with E-Money, Kcee, Harrysong, Soso Soberekon. (Press)

The most telling sign that the Five Star is one of the most beleaguered record labels in Nigeria is that its most popping event in 2015, is the death and resurrection of Skiibi Mayana. A hitherto unknown and unappreciated act.

The label made a man die for his art, and resurrected in less than 24 hours, with many failed efforts at rebranding the story, and selling Nigeria the wrong drug. Skiibi is still dead in music.

But that’s not to say Five Star Music didn’t win on some level last year. Kcee had a number of singles which maintained his relevance, but failed to hit. Harrysong came up strong with the ‘Reggae Blues’ single which put the entire crew back on the music map, and their song, ‘Ebe ano’, is still existent on the playlists of many music listeners and radio stations.

What Five Star Music lacks is discipline. For all their financial backing from E-Money, they release too little music to be taken seriously. They come across as a bunch of folks with more money than can be spent, working as avid hobbyists in the music industry.

The art is an afterthought to these people. Five Star music rates music as One Star. It's unclear what everyone's up to, and whether everyone's on the same page

50 CENT: "I still have millions...but not that many anymore"

0126-50-cent-tmz-0150 Cent is a financial shadow of his former self ... this according to new bankruptcy docs obtained by TMZ.
The mogul claims in the legal docs his bank booty totals $7.4 million. Add to that his real property holdings of around $8.8 million and his total assets are just north of $16 million.
It's a breathtaking number, but not in a good way. 50 sold his interest in Vitaminwater for somewhere between $60 million and $100 million. Mind you ... that's just the water. At his peak, 50 was reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
50 has put it out there that he has declared "rich man's" bankruptcy ... and that he's still rolling in the dough. He's got more money than most, but compare him to The Game, who deposited more than $13 million in his charity account alone.

The students of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University,Bauchi were left to regret their day as they battled a nasty fire accident that engulfed the female hostel of the school.

According to PUNCH Metro, the incident happened around 9pm in room 18 of Bethel Hostel, and it damaged the properties of the students occupying the hostel.

The inferno threw the school campus into pandemonium as the only thought on everyone's mind was how to put the fire away.

A high voltage is said to be the reason for the rather unfortunate incident, when there was a switch from the school’s power generator to the public electricity system.

Thankfully, no life was lost in the fire, but it took the efforts of fire fighters to put an end to the accident which last for two hours

SEE VIDEO: Jennifer Lopez bares her behind in public at Las Vegas Show

Jennifer Lopez was killing it “on the floor” at her new “All I Have” Vegas show on Sunday night when the unthinkable happened: J.Lo’s flawless body was too spectacular to contain itself, and her dazzling jumpsuit split open on the rear end.

The 46-year-old pop diva, who kicked off her Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood last week, had an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction as she wrapped up a show over the weekend.

Just as J.Lo took a bow, her shimmering jumpsuit split right down the middle of her behind.

Angelina Jolie surprise fans by displaying extremely skinny frame on red carpet

ANGELINA Jolie has stunned fans with a rare red carpet appearance to promote her new film, Kung Fu Panda 3.
The mum-of-six donned a loose-fitting, short-sleeved black dress for the movie’s premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in LA on Saturday.

Jolie turned up solo to support the animated film, for which she voiced the character Tigress.
However, it was the 39-year-old’s slender frame which stole the show, with various media agencies describing her as “painfully thin,”“scary skinny” and “almost skeletal.”
The actress said she did barely anything to prepare for the premiere, telling Extra: “I just pulled myself together, just cleaned the dirt off my feet.”

Jolie has been out of sight of late, mostly holed up in Cambodia directing the upcoming Netflix film First They Killed My Father, set for release later this year. She spent the holidays in Thailand with her family.

The Hollywood actress revealed that some of her children with husband Brad Pitt — Pax, 12, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, nine, and Knox, seven — recorded animal noises forKung Fu Panda.

“They were kind of shy. They don’t really want to be actors, but I didn’t want them to miss the opportunity. They came in, and they had a lot of fun with it,” Jolie toldEntertainment Tonight earlier this month.

Meanwhile, the Cambodian government has shut down rumours Jolie and Pitt were secretly adopting a baby boy named Allouy Shoun.

“I saw [the news] on Facebook, but actually it’s just a rumour,” Sao Samphois, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Social Affairs’ Inter-Country Adoption Administration, said.

“The adoption between the two countries is not yet open.”

The Tomb Raider star last year underwent surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes after doctors detected early signs of cancer.

She revealed the news in a column for The New York Times, like she did for her double mastectomy in 2013.

Jolie, who carries the mutated BRCA1 gene, lost her mother, actress Marcheline Bertand, grandmother and aunt to cancer.

Harry Potter star Alan Rickman dead at the age of 69

Alan Rickman
He became one of Britain’s best-loved acting stars thanks to roles including Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films and Hans Gruber in Die Hard.

The star won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild award in a career which began in the late 1970s.

However, he shot to stardom in 1988 when he played Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis's adversary, in Die Hard.

Rickman gained legions of new fans for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films.

“The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends,” family said in a statement.

Rickman's other notable roles include the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, Jamie in Truly, Madly, Deeply and Colonel Brandon in the 1995 version of Sense And Sensibility.

He took home a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his performance as Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny in HBO's 1996 drama.

Most recently the actor had been filming Tim Burton's Alice Through The Looking Glass, where he voiced Absolem the Caterpillar.

That film is due for release in May.

Rick Ross Explains That He May Kiss Adele When He Sees Her

Rick Ross has remixed Adele’s material and called her work “powerful.” Now, he’s saying he might kiss her when they meet.

“I love Adele,” he told Rolling Stone. “When I see her, I may kiss Adele. She speaks for so many people. When I hear her voice, I stop and make that face and say, ’What the f–k, man?’ I just gaze off into the sky for a second and think creatively. Even someone like myself, who’s not working toward being the most beautiful voice in the world, has to recognize it. I’ve got a beat ready for her if I ever run across her.”

The MMG boss (who recently broke off his engagement to Lira Galore) may love Adele, but he hasn’t shown that same appreciation for his longtime rival 50 Cent. Despite their long, heated beef, Ross now describes their relationship as “amusing.”

“At this point, my relationship with Curtis is really amusing, due to the fact that I’m the biggest L he ever took,” Rozay said. “I’m still enjoying life. My kids love me. I’m blessed. And when it comes to Curtis, it’s just unfortunate. I’m not happy that his boxing company went under. I’m not happy that his clothing company went under. I’m not happy his record label went under. I’m not happy that he went bankrupt. I’m not happy that he doesn’t have a relationship with his son. That’s not something to be happy about.

“But to see him parading around, still able to hold his head up every day, with all of that weighing on him — that makes me happy,” he added. “I admire him for being able to hold his head up in a city that has revoked all of his passes. We’ve had a quite enjoyable past, and I still smile when I see him.”

Rozay’s beef with 50 Cent is still developing in court. Last month, the G-Unit general sued the MMG boss for $2 million over the use of “In Da Club” in a mixtape.

While this beef has gone on, Ross has found time to remix Adele. Listen to his October rendition of “Hello” below.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Adopts a Baby Boy From a Slum In Cambodia.

The 40-year-old actress decided to take the child, Allouy Shoun, under her wing after her daughters Shiloh, nine, and Zahara, 10, bonded with kids from the tot’s family.
She was directing First They Killed My Father in Siem Reap in the northwest of the country when her kids formed a friendship with the 13 brothers and sisters.
Shocked by their living conditions, Angelina vowed to sponsor the family and take their young son to live with them, but reportedly didn’t tell her Fury actor husband Brad, 52, before making the decision.

“This was all staged like some secret military operation,” a source close to the couple told Radar Online.
“Angie didn’t want Brad to get wind of what she was doing because she knew he’d throw a fit! Angie has pledged to pay more than $1 million to help support the family and to adopt baby Allouy.”
Since meeting the family, Shiloh and Zahara are said to have splashed out more than $275 on clothes for them, taken them on trips to an arcade and bought them two brand new bikes.
One of the kids, Leida Shoun, 16, explained: “We only had one bicycle for the entire family and it was old. So for us this is an amazing gift. Shiloh and Zahara and their family are very good, very nice people!”

Speaking about the Jolie-Pitt family, she continued: “We have known them for a while. They sponsor us. I play with Shiloh or Zahara. They meet us in Siem Reap town. They take us to the arcade in the Angkor Centre. I like it when we play ball.”
The Maleficent star adopted her first child Maddox, 14, from Cambodia in 2002, and subsequently adopted Zahara and Pax.
She also has kids Shiloh Nouvel, Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline with Brad.

Does Being Attractive Have Impact On Grades In College?

Being attractive can have a real impact on your grades in college – but only if you’re a girl. A study from the Metropolitan State University of Denver confirmed your worst fears: female students deemed more physically attractive tend to have higher grades in college.

But wait! There’s more. That correlation carries into adult life, resulting in a boost in hirability for women with mediocre resumes and a wage gap of $140,000 over a lifetime. Terrific.

Rey Hernández-Julián and Christina Peters, researchers from the Metropolitan State University of Denver, looked at data on students enrolled from from 2006 to 2011. Using their student I.D. photos (which are never, ever good) volunteers from outside the school rated students’ attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 10.

The larger scale was used as opposed to a 1 to 5 scale to account to haircuts or fashion choices or other variable that could easily change, but still impact how you look to someone judging you by the photo you took at the registration office after hauling ass across campus in 100 percent humidity after an eight-hour orientation.

Hernández-Julián and Peters then matched the data to students’ grades. Female students earned lower grades in the classroom than students deemed more conventionally attractive. Even after controlling for test scores, the disparity in traditional courses was significant.

Online classrooms, however, didn’t show the same results. The women deemed attractive had worse grades in online courses than expected.

How did attractiveness impact male students? It didn’t. At all.

And that’s just the beginning. After earning that degree, “less attractive” women can look forward to making an estimated $140,000 less during their lifetime, according to economist Daniel Hamermesh in the “Beauty Pays.”

Another study found that a job candidate’s appearance didn’t make a difference if they were well-qualified, but beauty offered an extra boost to women with mediocre résumés. Which sucks.

And there you have it. Science has confirmed what we’ve all feared. Your freshman year student I.D. photo determines the course of your life.

Celebrities Who Regret Their Plastic Surgery

THEY went under the knife in an attempt to feel more beautiful, but they were left feeling nothing but regret.
Here are the stars who have had plastic surgery but wish they didn’t:
Sophie Monk: The Celebrity Apprentice winner admitted to Who magazine in 2011 that she has had lip fillers, but wasn’t happy with the results.
“Half of my lip was removed with the cyst, and I was advised to get filler in my top lip to help balance it out,” said the singer and actor.
“I should have said no to the filler in the first place but I trusted the doctor.”

Jane Fonda: The actor and former model looks amazing for 78, but plastic surgery is partly to thank.
“I did have plastic surgery,” she said.
“I’m not proud of the fact that I’ve had it. But I grew up so defined by my looks. I was taught to think that if I wanted to be loved, I had to be thin and pretty. That leads to a lot of trouble.”

Cher: The singer probably wishes that she could actually ‘turn back time’ and change her mind about getting plastic surgery.
“I’ve had my breasts done,” she said to People magazine in the 1990s.
“But my breast operations were a nightmare. They were really botched in every way. If anything, they were worse after than before.”

Cameron Diaz: The Charlie’s Angels star has vowed to never again get Botox after the experience left her looking a little odd.
“I’ve tried [Botox] before, where it was like a little tiny touch of something,” she saidto E! news.
“It changed my face in such a weird way that I was like, ‘No, I don’t want to be like that.’ I’d rather see my face ageing than a face that doesn’t belong to me at all.”

Gwyneth Paltrow: For someone who is obsessed with living a ‘clean’ lifestyle, it’s surprising that Paltrow is so willing to “try anything” to improve her appearance.
“Except I won’t do Botox again, because I looked crazy,” she said to Glamourmagazine in 2013.
“I looked like Joan Rivers!”
The Iron Man star also opened up to the mag about getting Thermage laser treatment, describing it as “quite painful”.
“It feels like someone’s smacking your face with a rubber band that has an electric shock in it. But I would do it again, because I feel like it took five years off my face.”
As for going under the knife, Paltrow said, “I would be scared, but you know, talk to me when I’m 50”.

Tara Reid: “If I had to do it again, I never would have done it in the first place,” said the Sharknado star about her plastic surgery procedures, which include a boob job and body contouring.
“First of all, I asked for big Bs [B cups], and he did not give me big Bs,” said the actor on The View.
“He gave me Cs, and I didn’t want them. At all. Right after the surgery, I had some bumps along the edges of my nipples, but the doctor said, ‘Don’t worry. It’s going to be better.’ But after six months of ‘it’s going to get better,’ it started to get worse and worse.”
And the body contouring was a disaster as well.
“My stomach became the most ripply, bulgy thing,” she said.
“I had a hernia, this huge bump next to my bellybutton. As a result, I couldn’t wear a bikini. I lost a lot of work.”

Reid Ewing: The Modern Family actor (he plays Dylan on the show) recently opened up about his battle with body dysmorphia, which has resulted in several surgical procedures.
“I genuinely believed if I had one procedure I would suddenly look like Brad Pitt,” hewrote in The Huffington Post.
The first of many procedures he got was cheek implants, but he was horrified by the results.
“After all the swelling finally went down, the results were horrendous. The lower half of my cheeks were as hollow as a corpse’s, which, I know, is the opposite of what you’d expect, as they are called cheek implants. They would be more aptly called cheekbone implants.
