SSANU embarks On A Nationwide Strike Today: Nigerian Universities Shutdown

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has embarked on a nationwide industrial action which it threatened last month Today January the 5th, 2016 to protest against government’s alleged decision to dismiss 2000 colleagues of theirs.


President of the Association, Mr Samson Ugwoke, told journalist at a press conference held last month in Abuja that the planned decision of the association will be carried out without regrets if the Federal Government goes ahead with the implementation of the proposed sack as contained in a circular from the Ministry of Education to federal universities.

The association is calling on the government to withdraw the termination letters that have already been served to some of its members or risk their industrial action.

In another related matter, Staff of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) have staged a protest against the leadership of the university.

The workers, under the auspices of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) protested the non-promotion of their members for over two years.

Addressing reporters during at university premises in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the chapter Chairman of SSANU, Comrade Loveth Ekwemalor, accused the management of introducing unfriendly appraisal guidelines to stagnate staff promotions as against what was contained in the current university scheme of service.
