UNN's Host of the West African University Games: The Journey So Far




The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is hosting the 14th West African University Games (WAUGA). At present, Fourteen (14) West Africa Countries are active members of WAUG, represented by about 60 Universities. Only Cape Verde, Gambia and Mauritania are not represented yet in WAUG. So, literarily the WAUG Games can be called the ECOWAS Students Games.

At least 50 universities are expected to arrive at the school in Enugu State. According to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria (UNN), Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, the Games would feature only football (men) and hockey (men and women). To show how the school care for the welfare of visiting schools, she has provided comfortable hostels and round the clock security in each hostel. There is also at the luxury of the teams, the spacious and peaceful environment of the school. The number schools in attendance are not really up to expectation, most or all of which are Nigerian universities alone!


The games kicked off on Saturday with an opening ceremony. In the opening match of the football tournament, Team UNN trashed Team OAU 1-0 in Group A.


The Football tournament has eight(8) groups of competiting teams. Categorized from Group A to Group H, of which Team FUO is in Group F with DELSU, LAUTECH and UNIMAID as other group members. Team FUO is to play its first match against DELSU on Sunday 18th October,2015 by 4.00pm at the Akanu-Ibiam Football Stadium UNN.


Today, 20th October, in hockey male category, Team UNN lost to Obafemi Awolowo University 1-0. Also by 2PM today Team UNN will be Battling it out in the football pitch with University of Benue. Details will be brought to you as it unfolds. However the UNN female hockey will hit the pitch with the prestigious University of Ibadan.
